“We believe ethical farming starts with healthy animals, healthy soil and sustainable farming practices.”

At our farm, we not only raise pasture-raised free-range hens for egg production but also grow our own fruit and vegetables and raise our own meat including beef, lamb, goat, chicken and pork. There is something incredibly rewarding about sitting down to a meal that has been almost entirely grown and produced here on the farm. When time permits, Tahna even enjoys making homemade cheese from the milk produced by her four dairy cows.

Having previously lived and worked in some very remote parts of Australia, moving to Dimbulah from Longreach in 2016 was a completely different farming experience for us. At the time, the region was in the middle of a drought, and it was hard to believe the Mareeba Shire had been drought declared for the first time since the 1970s. While the landscape and climate were very different to what we had experienced out west, it still felt far greener than the conditions we had become accustomed to.

One of the simple joys we still appreciate today is being able to plant seeds or put in cuttings and actually watch them grow — all without a grasshopper plague in sight! That’s farming life for you.
